Spin Bowling Techniques Explained: Master the Art of Spin

Spin bowling is deception through physics and patience. The ball does not need to turn a mile; it needs to make the batter play the wrong line, length or tempo.

Quick read: A beginner-to-intermediate guide to spin bowling, variations and control.

  1. Off-spin

Turns from off to leg for a right-handed batter.

  2. Leg-spin

Turns from leg to off and offers attacking variations.

  3. Left-arm orthodox

Changes the angle and challenges right-handers differently.

  4. Wrist-spin

Harder to control but often more wicket-taking.

  5. Flight

    Tempts the batter forward.

  6. Dip

Makes the ball drop shorter than expected.

  7. Drift

Moves the ball sideways in the air before pitching.

  8. Variations

Arm ball, googly, slider, top-spinner and carrom ball work best when the stock ball is trusted.

Spin is a craft of repeatable threat: same action, different problem.
